Advocacy for Inclusion have made a submission to the Federal Inquiry on the extent and nature of poverty in Australia by the Senate Community Affairs References Committee. The submission highlights the extent and nature of poverty amongst people with disability by focusing on two specific and interconnected drivers. Building on our White Papers on Income Support and Housing, we reiterate the cost-of-living pressures, housing stress and insecurities, financial hardship and un(der)employment challenges heightening the risk of people with disability falling into persistent cycles of poverty. We particularly urge Government to acknowledge and resolve the shortcomings of the system of income support for people with disability, and to take action to address the lack of accessible and affordable housing.
