An exciting opportunity exists for a suitably qualified and motivated person to fulfil the role of Chief Executive Officer with a leading disability rights association.

 

Remuneration:                 $80,000 to $95,000 (depending skills, qualifications and experience) + salary sacrifice

Term:                                    ongoing (based on current funding arrangements)

Hours:                                   between 32-38 hrs per week (negotiable)

Location:                              The Griffin Centre, Canberra (Civic), ACT

 

Who we are

Advocacy for Inclusion works within a human rights framework. We acknowledge the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and have voluntarily signed onto the ACT Human Rights Act. All staff are expected to understand these instruments and work to support them. All Advocacy for Inclusion staff have a strong ethical makeup and work towards the highest quality outcomes for our constituency.

Advocacy for Inclusion is a Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) and has a reputation as one of Australia’s leading disability rights organisations with an extensive body of policy work, particularly in the areas of decision making, violence, parenting rights, justice, and gender equality. This is a rare opportunity to lead a team that produces groundbreaking policy and research work based on our frontline individual and Self-Advocacy Programs. We work within an intersectional framework.

 

Advocacy for Inclusion focusses on improving equality within justice processes for Canberra’s most marginalised people with disabilities.

 

Reporting to the board, The CEO is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and strategic management of Advocacy for Inclusion.  The CEO will lead a dedicated a highly skilled team of staff to implement the broad outcomes of Advocacy for Inclusion in accordance with our Strategic Plan.

The CEO will be a leader driven to protect and advance the human rights of people with disability in the ACT.  This position is ideally suited to someone with demonstrated leadership and high-level management experience in the human rights, disability, advocacy, or not for profit sectors.  Ideally, the candidate with have a strong knowledge of the structures and functioning of the ACT community sector and will be able to build strong, effective and lasting partnerships with Government and non-government organisations. Strong candidates will also have an understanding of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, its implementation, and its relationship to other rights mechanisms such as the ACT Human Rights Act.  The candidate will be required to oversee administrative and financial management processes and evaluation of program objectives.

 

Who we are looking for.

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate that you have a solid understanding of independent advocacy and intersectionality and how they both relate to the disability rights movement.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate their claims against the following criteria:

  • Exceptional leadership and high-level organisational management in a senior management capacity
  • High level / rapid analysis of key issues affecting people with disabilities in the ACT and ability to speak about them
  • Manage the implementation of successful, effective programs that advance the human rights of people with disability in the ACT
  • Outstanding financial management skills and ability to optimise funding opportunities
  • Experience of senior level management within the disability, advocacy or community sector
  • Build strong, collaborative partnerships with the ACT community sector to operationalise AFI’s strategic plan.
  • Demonstrate highly developed negotiation and written and oral communication abilities
  • A proven ability to speak or respond, in a considered or concise way, to current or key issues

The successful applicant will be required to hold an ACT working with vulnerable people registration.
